Really bright n colorful!
Great quality! The pieces are solid chunks of wood with a screen printed image on it and the back and sides are painted a corresponding color. When the pieces are picked up, the image of that same piece is underneath it, so they don’t have to decide where it goes by the shape alone. We bought this and the Insect one for our 1 yr old for Christmas in 2013, so of course she needed help with it but the big chunky pieces were easy for her to hold and its just so bright and colorful!! It didn’t get much play as a ‘puzzle’ but she liked to just play with the creature pieces. : )It’s almost a yr later and they still look great…just a couple of chips off the color but nothing really noticeable. It’s not played with constantly, but whenever she comes across it she still plays with the pieces and tries to fit em into the puzzle board now!

Melissa and Doug have gone CHEAP!
First, the descriptions still say these are hand-painted. These have stickers like all the modern M&D stuff. That being said, this one looks like only the background is a sticker and the animals are either still painted or just a better quality sticker than the knob puzzles. But the quality has gone downhill. I have a Noah’s Arc made by them about 8 years ago that has gone through three young boys and it’s still in better shape than the M&D puzzles my son got for his first birthday two weeks ago. The stickers rip easily when chewed on. He got a couple of big chunky knob puzzles from M&D on his birthday too and those are all starting to rip off. This puzzle is a tiny bit better (thus 3 stars) than the knob puzzles in quality. I’ve decided though to not let him play with it much until he’s older – which is a shame. I really wish that Melissa and Doug would create two lines of products, a “value” line where they have the stickers and then a high end “original” line. I’d pay the money for the higher end stuff because it would be well worth it. But the new style M&D stuff is universally disappointing to anyone who has seen their original stuff.Update: June 2013 my son does like playing with this puzzle and it has held up better than the knob puzzles. One piece has started to lose a bit of the picture on one of the animals, but its not terrible. If all I had to compare this to was other brands, this would get 4 stars, but I’m still comparing it to original M&D stuff and its not as good.

My kid loves it!
My 20 month old loves puzzles… the only problem is that she can’t really do the little 24 piece puzzles by herself yet, but these Melissa & Doug Chunky Puzzles are perfect for her. Each piece has the same picture underneath it, so it is more of a matching game than a puzzle, which is perfect for her age. We have a few of these puzzles now and she loves to mix all the pieces from all of them and then figure out which board to put each piece on. She loves her puzzles and with these ones, we often have to pull her away after a while to try something else. She could play with these for hours at a time if we let her. Best of all, these are educational, it wasn’t long after playing with these puzzles that she started trying to make the sounds of some of the animals when she matches the pieces up. These are built well. I’d highly recommend these puzzles.

Well made!
My two year old absolutely loves this puzzle! It’s nice that the picture is also printed on the board of the puzzle too so it helps her learn and make the connection if she is struggling while just comparing the shapes. The large thick pieces are easy for her to handle and she can easily place them in the correct spots without getting frustrated!

Great foundation tools
This is a great tool for engaging the oil ones and labeling. Its also good for teaching hand eye coordination and simple commands like turn the car around, pick up, put on and clean up time.I picked up a few of these puzzles and I like that durability of the wood pieces and the strength of the board itself. The images are applied and not painted to the blocks. I’ve had these for about 14 months and I’ve seen no lifting or peeling. The twins just turned 3 a few months ago and there were a favorite toy option for them. Sometimes, I had to send them to nap with their favorite pieces.I have used a damp paper towel to clean stains. I’m more than satisfied. I purchased the farm animals, shapes, and construction sight.

Just get it lol
These poor animals get thrown, chewed on, jammed in the wrong spot, lost and refound… Needless to say they are a favorite for not just my special needs 3 year old, but all of my kids, age has no confinement here, glad to please everyone with one toy.

Very study and durable!
This has been one of my grandchildren’s favorite puzzles. I have one at my house that each toddler/preschooler has played with numerous times. It is very sturdy, holding its shapes and colors perfectly. I bought a second for my out of state 18 month old grandson to have at home. One of the best puzzles for toddlers!

Sturdy and high quality puzzle
Sturdy and high quality. Easy to play with for a 14- month toddler. Entertaining. She plays with it every day for the past month. The animals are quit thick, which allow a better/easier hold of them. Beautiful colors.

Love these as gifts
These wood chunky puzzles are so cute for gifts. And littles seems to love the animals. The ones I had so my kids held up very well. One I gave as a gift had the paint chipping off. May depend on how rough a kid treats it.

The puzzle is the perfect size for tiny hands. The pieces are thick and the board is durable and has the picture of the animal piece that will fit into the spot. It’s an excellent, fun way to learn for toddlers.

What I expected from Melissa & Doug.
Bought for my two-year old, non-verbal grandson. He seems to enjoy this puzzle, only one he has ever paid any attention to. It’s nice and thick, like it better than the ones with pegs.

Cute
Cute “puzzle” than can be serviceable for multiple ages. My grandson, at 11 months, just likes holding the shapes and chewing on them. The paint doesn’t come off. I like the matching picture below the pieces also.

My daughter loves it. Simple yet educational and super cute toy!
Very cute and colorful, my 2 1/2 years old daughter loves to play with it, perfect size for her little hands and easy for her to hold the pieces. Besides teaching them about shapes and making the connection in their little brains that says “this goes here or there”, it allows me to teach her to name the animals and the sounds they make (in both english and spanish because we are a latin family) and she would take one of them and comes to me to show me and tell me its name and do the sound, it’s really cute 🙂 . Also since it is so colorful she can practice the colors names (again english and spanish) and I can make up safari stories or take one of these guys and make them come to life, which she loves!! :-)I love a simple toy that looks more like real life and still keeps them entertained and at the same time encourages their imagination, I beleive a kid at this age needs a lot less from a toy than we think, they can get fascinated by a piece of wood and may lose interest in the sophisticated battery operated “whatever” in an hour.Summing up, very simple yet educational and cute toy, I love that combination and apparently my little girl does too 🙂

Super cute puzzle, not very durable
I loved this puzzle when i bought it! Unfortunately, the wood is cheap and doesn’t hold up to my 16 month old’s playing with them/putting them in his mouth. If any water gets on it it leaves a stain that can’t be wiped off, too, which isn’t great for a baby toy. I would buy it again because he does like it, just wish it was higher quality

Keeps my almost 2 year
This puzzle is everything to my almost 2 year old. He’s a big fan of animals right now and this is right up his alley. Thick, durable pieces. He will sit and play with this puzzle for 30 minutes at a time. He likes to put them in their places and then take them out one by one to describe each animal and the sound that they make. It’s easy enough that he can do it on his own without getting frustrated. Perfect for 18 months to 2 years old.

Great for my almost 2yo
Good quality puzzle. Love the chunky style because it makes it easy for my kid to pick up and place. The big pieces also make for an easier clean up and easy to find compared to small piece puzzles, because kids….. also seems to be holding up well despite occasionally being chunked across the room. Definitely age appropriate!

Chunky puzzle pieces good for little hands
I love the chunky size of the pieces. They are easy to hold and they fit into place easily. The puzzle is brightly painted and most of the animals are different colors so it helps children distinguish between them. I bought it for my 18 month old and she plays with it everyday. No chips on the paint after using it for about 3 months. It would make a great gift for a toddler

Baby loves the colors and shapes but the farm one is better.
My 12 month old had been playing obsessively with the farm version of this board since she was eight months old. Playing obsessively means carrying the animals around in her mouth and leaving them in random places. So we got this one as well, she loves the lion and zebra best. I still like the farm one better however because it’s easier to come up with sounds to demonstrate for each animal. I have no idea what sound a zebra or an ostrich makes if anything. So we just work on colors with this one, although a hippo is not actually purple and a rhino is not actually blue, so the learning potential of this item is questionable. At 12 months she has not learned the actual game of putting the animals into their little slots, but I guess that will come later and it still has a lot of potential for fun with the great colors and shapes.

Great for my Niece.
I purchased this puzzle for my niece who at the time was 16 months old. She enjoys puzzles and animals so I thought it would be an excellent fit. As it turns out she LOVES this puzzle and is one of her favorites. The Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Safari Chunky Puzzle is very good quality. It is sturdy with wood puzzle pieces. When my niece first received this puzzle she banged on it a lot and there has been very little ware despite that. In addition the the sturdiness, this puzzle is painted beautifully with very vivid colors. The pieces also fit perfectly into their spots. The puzzle is also great for learning. My niece doesn’t just put the puzzle together, but together we go over the names of the animals, as well as their colors.I would definitely recommend the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Safari Chunky Puzzle, as well as other Melissa & Doug puzzles. I have since purchased the fantasy themed puzzle and intend to also purchase the letters puzzle.

Great Puzzle
Bought the jungle theme for my grandson, 16 months old.I was really impressed with the look ofthis puzzle. When you pull a piece out, the picture of the animal is there, so it encourages the little ones to place the pieces in the right place. Now, even tho he is very attracted to the bright colored animals, he isn’t placing them correctly yet… he’s close, lol. However, I absolutely think this is a great way for him to learn. Also, although I haven’t had this long (to be fair), the quality, so far, seems fantastic.I’m already contemplating on ordering the farm animals.

I really like this puzzle
I really like this puzzle. The colors are true to the picture. It is made of good quality wood and the edges are smooth. No problem with splinters. The faces of the characters are so cute and appealing. This is a very durable and safe puzzle. It is a fun way to learn about some of the animals in the zoo. It is a good way for children to learn more about colors. I like that it helps develop those small motor skills, too. She will, also, learn about the differences in shapes and sizes. It takes a critical eye to match the puzzle piece to the right cut out. Puzzles are a good gift because the child does everything themselves. They don’t push a button and have it done for them. They have been around for a long time for a reason. Note: If you have more then one puzzle, take a sharpie and put a number on the back of the puzzle and the same number on the back of each piece. It works perfectly and you have added another skill. Number recognition, take two or three puzzles and mix all their pieces together then let the matching begin. My two year old niece won’t be able to use that skill yet but as she gets older she will and won’t out grow the puzzle skills as fast.
