Great for toddlers!
I have been searching for good puzzles for toddlers. I am a developmental specialist and work with infants and toddlers with special needs. I look for easy puzzles that have pieces that are easy for toddlers to pick up. I have always loved Melissa & Doug puzzles because they are always so well made and typically very age appropriate. I need puzzles that are sturdy and hold up well. I toss them in bags and in my trunk so they have to be able to take a good beating. When this puzzle arrived, I was beyond excited. Here are the things that I really like about this puzzle and using it for toddlers: – The puzzle has bright colors. This is great when using with young children to keep their attention. – When you take the puzzle piece out, it has the same picture underneath. This makes it easier for toddlers to figure out where the piece goes. – The pieces are thick chunky pieces so even though it doesn’t have the little knobs on top, small, uncoordinated hands can get them in and out. – The entire puzzle piece is painted so that there is not any raw wood showing. – The animals are the colors of real animals. I have too many puzzles and kids’ books that have animals all crazy colors. At this age, it’s important that the animals are as realistic as possible. The animals on this puzzle are the colors that real ones would be (pig is pink, sheep is white, etc…).I have been using this a ton and the kids really seem to love it. I can use it to not only work on the fine motor skill of putting the puzzle piece in but also the cognitive skill of matching the animals, the language skill of learning animals sounds, names and colors. There is just so much I can do with this puzzle with really young children and ones with delays.

Durable, long term toy investment
I got this puzzle on a lightning deal so the price was just perfect. I had had my eyes on this series of puzzles for a while now so I was thrilled to see them featured! I was debating between the peg puzzles and the chunky puzzles but ultimately decided on the chunky for a few reasons:-Though more expensive, the thicker pieces can hold up to more beatings-Pieces are thick enough to stand on their own so can double as wooden “imaginary play” pieces (we use them with blocks)-Thicker pieces are easier for little hands to grab onto- as opposed to grabbing onto the tiny pegs. I know Melissa and Doug sells puzzles with large knobs, but I felt my son would outgrow those too quickly and this way I would get the most use for my money.I love the bold colors of the farm animals, their smiling faces, and I love that the pieces have the right amount of weight to them. Unlike some of the other Melissa and Doug toys, these don’t seem to just have a sticker on the front that can get peeled off (or sucked off since at this age everything ends up in the mouth. The edges of the pieces are painted and smooth. In terms of age, I love that such a wide range of ages can get use out of them. I got these for my son when he was 9 months old, so obviously he was a bit young to be assembling the puzzle. At first he just took the pieces out from their places and now, at 11 months we go through and practice animal sounds. Eventually, he’ll be able to do the puzzle himself. (Note: I know the recommended age for this product is 2+ years. Use your own discretion as a parent to make the right choice for your child)

Great fit in small hands
18 month old granddaughter can handle pieces easily and match pictures. She is very proud of herself when she gets a piece turned and it falls into place.

Great, but…
Great product, except mine came with defects on 2 of the animals 🙁 so upsetting really was excited for this. Overall the product is good but be aware that it might come not in a perfect condition especially if you’re getting this as a gift.

Nice quality but smells
The puzzles are great quality. Nice vibrant colors, just what I expected from melissa and doug. Unfortunately they smell strongly of hookah. So much so that I wouldn’t gift them to someone else. I plan on washing them before letting my toddler play with them again.

matches a goat piece to a goat image – so only for beginners
When I bought this puzzle, it was made of wooden layers and appeared painted. The stylized/cartoony animals were not overly so and they were colored in appropriate to reality. The animals when removed, have the same image beneath it.. so a kid matches a goat to a goat so the challenge is lining the piece up correctly to fit into the space. This makes the set great as a first chunky puzzle, so I will only buy 1 or 2 sets from Melissa & Doug…. The rest I will buy from Janod (my favorites are the zoo and forest puzzles) because kids match colors and animals shapes which is more of a challenge – in other words on Janod boards, the image of the animal is not on the board so kids have to pay attention to the color and shape of the animals to play on the board. I will also be buying the upper and lower case puzzles by Hape that have the back of each letter uncolored so you know which side faces forward. Overall, the farm puzzle is nice. A little bigger than what i think an 18 month old can carry without dropping the pieces and I think the paint may not last forever… but it works as a first introduction to the concept.

The cutest, chunkiest, farm-iest puzzle!
Our little one LOVES moo-moos! What more can we say? This puzzle also goes perfect w/ The Little Blue Truck book. We use both the puzzle and book to describe the story. Adorable puzzle for those little hands to work!

Great puzzle
We really like these puzzles; in fact, we have 3 different themed puzzles! My 18 month old loves to do them, and they’re a great size, shape and thickness for his little hands. My only complain about the product is that I wish they were coated in clear paint or some sort of protectant, as the paint does chip a bit at the edges when my toddler slams them into place. I feel like something designed for children of this age should stand up to toddler abuse. my only other complaint was for the seller: I feel like this puzzle should have been packaged with something other than a poly mailer. Some sort of padding would have been nice. I know it’s a fairly sturdy wooden puzzle, but still. Anyway, buy several of these in different themes, they’re great!

Great for toddlers!
This product is light weight for my kid to carry. All the pecies fit together and he absolutely loves it. The price was unbeatable for the knowledge and fun he is getting. I’ll be ordering more in the future for him.

Great gift.
Bought this for my grandson’s first birthday. He loves it. Pieces are very easy for little fingers to pick up. Animals are very recognizable for young children.

Good, use a protective spray on it
Great product, very durable. I use it for speech therapy with multiple kids a day and it’s held up well. The only issue is that it’s scuffed up. I recommend spraying a protective clear coat on it so that it doesn’t get scuffed up. Otherwise I love this and will definitely buy more puzzles. It’s very easy for kids to hold and move. Could be better if the holes were deeper.

Perfect First Puzzle
Such a fun little puzzle! Our 15 month old enjoys playing with the pieces and hasn’t really caught on to the “place puzzle piece here” concept but we know once she does she won’t put it down! 10/10!

Good for farm animals intro
I wanted a way to introduce farm animals and since my baby didn’t yet have a chunky puzzle as well thought this is a good way to introduce both. I like it so far.

Great for a one year old!
My daughter LOVES puzzles, but is too little to use the pegs. I bought her this one along with a few others & she loves how chunky the animals are! The colors are so vibrant & the durability is amazing! Makes the perfect gift!

1st Birthday
For a friend’s granddaughter’s 1st birthday she suggested puzzles. I ordered these and they were perfect. The knobs on one puzzle make it so easy for tiny hands to manipulate. Melissa and Doug puzzles are top quality. I would definitely order these for a little one again!

Excellent purchase!
Great puzzle, made of wood so it’s sturdy. I’m not sure what they made the animal designs with. I thought they would just print on paper and attach it but it’s not. Which is way better! Nothing worse than getting wood puzzles that have paper glued to it so as soon as it’s been chewed on or gets wet it starts to fall off. That is not the case with this puzzle though! Ours have been chewed on and stuck in water and the animal designs have not come off 👍

Durable and cute puzzle for young toddler
My 15 month old granddaughter LOVES it! She’s really good and putting the animals where they go. The puzzle is very sturdy and all the pieces fit perfectly with a tad bit of wiggle room to get them in and out easily, not to mention it’s so cute! Worth the buy for sure!

This is a great tool for engaging the oil ones and labeling
This is a great tool for engaging the oil ones and labeling. Its also good for teaching hand eye coordination and simple commands like turn the car around, pick up, put on and clean up time.I picked up a few of these puzzles and I like that durability of the wood pieces and the strength of the board itself. The images are applied and not painted to the blocks. I’ve had these for about 14 months and I’ve seen no lifting or peeling. The twins just turned 3 a few months ago and there were a favorite toy option for them. Sometimes, I had to send them to nap with their favorite pieces.I have used a damp paper towel to clean stains. I’m more than satisfied. I purchased the farm animals, shapes, zoo animals and construction sight.

Easy to use
This is a nice set to play with or even gift. Love the way the whole set is. It is nice and chunky. Apart from using it as a puzzle you could also use it to do story time. The pieces will stand on its own as it is chunky in size. My lil one loves playing with this set. It is easy to use and place the pieces.

Confused by the other reviews
I purchased this set for my daughter here on Sah Creatives last year, and again today in a big box store for my niece’s birthday and both sets are solid wood with painted on images. Maybe M&D switched to the cheaper plywood and sticker combo for a while and then switched back? I also purchased the zoo animal set for a friend’s toddler which came as a solid wood with paint set as well. We have the aquarium with large knob set that is the sticker on mdf set, but these chunky puzzle sets are not.My daughter has had her farm puzzle for a year and still plays with it. She enjoys lining up all the animals so they’re standing on our coffee table. She’s quite proficient at putting then back on the board correctly, so I think this set would be better introduced to the 12-18 month age range (my daughter is 2+.)

Favorite toy holds up great
My son is 16 months old and his favorite song is “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” I couldn’t resist getting this puzzle. Unfortunately, at his age, he’s not too interested in puzzles. He is interested in the puzzle pieces, however. His favorite is the cow which he carries everywhere—bath, meals, pool. We know own two separate sets so he never loses any (or chucks it in the garbage which he has done though thankfully he confessed). The puzzle pieces stand up to some pretty heavy wear and tear though the ones that have gotten wet repeatedly have a little less paint. I’ve never seen him so attached to any other toy.At the same time, I bought
Melissa & Doug Zoo Animals Sound Puzzle
but the noises actually scared the living daylights out of him.Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did receive ones that were actually painted.Update: A month later and he loves to put the puzzle pieces in their slots! It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

I docked a star because I received the puzzle with a pretty significant scratch on the goat
I read several reviews here that said this puzzle was not real wood, that it was not hand-painted, that the animals were actually stickers … I’m not sure what happened with those orders, but the puzzle I got is absolutely real wood and painted, not decorated with stickers. I docked a star because I received the puzzle with a pretty significant scratch on the goat. It didn’t appear to happen during shipping because the plastic wrap wasn’t torn, so maybe just a quality control issue. There was also some bubbling in the paint on the pig. That being said, I will order puzzles from this brand again. The pieces are nice and heavy, and thick to make it easy for little hands to grasp. My daughter is almost two and doesn’t quite understand puzzles that aren’t just simple shapes, but she loves naming the animals and telling me the sounds they make. Overall I’m happy with this product, and I’m hoping the issues with scratches and bubbling in the paint were a one-time issue.

Perfect size for little hands!
My daughter is almost 10 months old and loves to grab everything. Though she is still in the prime of developing her fine motor skills, this puzzle is PERFECT for her size and current abilities. The shapes come up about 0.5-1 inch off of the board, which gives her a great amount of the puzzle piece to grasp with just one hand. Since the pieces are wooden, they provide a nice amount of weight that is not too heavy for her to pick up, but definitely helps her get a better sense of the different weight of things. The board is also wooden, so she likes to clack the animals pieces back down on the board to make noise. I also like that these pieces do not have wooden pegs on them that could potentially be a choking hazard and picking up the different shaped animals also gives her better sensory play.Great quality puzzle for a steal of a price!
