Get this abacus!
My 7 year old daughter still uses her fingers for simple addition even though she is in a gifted math program and has moved on to and understands more complex math. Of course she doesn’t have enough fingers! So I ordered this abacus, not sure if she would even understand how to use it. Well she uses it daily and it is a great visual to really see what each number looks like and why we would add or subtract to problem solve. She even has learned some simple multiplication (3×3, 2×4, and 2×11 were the problems she had to solve.) “Times” (mulitiplication) really gave her anxiety, but with this abacus, she really could see “3 three times,” “2 four times,” and “2 eleven times,” as well as allowing her to easily see how multiplication was a communitive property. No more multiplication anxiety! I love this abacus. We have only used it in this way so far, but I am really looking forward to reading the directions and checking out some YouTube videos as another reviewer suggested. I chose this abacus based on all of the positive reviews and am happy with it! It is strong and sturdy and serves it’s purpose. I have a 2 year old that loves moving the beads back and forth and it is not flimsy.

Nice quality
I ordered this for my 1st grader that doesn’t really care for subtraction. I thought it would be another option and something fun for them to try. The product itself came nicely packaged and the quality is really nice (we’ve purchased other Melissa and Doug items in the past and quality has always been nice). We don’t use it a lot but my daughter will pull it over to use when we do math instead of getting frustrated. Haven’t had any issues with it and would recommend. Nice and sturdy.

Classics never die
My son is in first grade and was struggling with math. I remembered what used to work with me 35 years ago when I was in school. I bought him this and he was excited. My uncle who is 57 heard me talking about it and told me that was the way that he learned math also. So as you can see the classics never die! If it’s broke don’t fix it!

Perfect for Physical Therapy
I am in my elder years (75) and need alot of physical therapy. The problem I had was that my therapist will say things like do three sets of ten, holding each for five seconds. That means I had to keep track of three changing numbers. It was very difficult. After discussions with my therapist, we came up with using an abacus to keep track. I count the ten seconds in my head and the abacus keeps track of the other two numbers. I bought several abacuses but this was the best. The balls are big enough for adult hands and the rods holding the balls are slick. I look forward to using your product at my PT visit next week. Thank you for creating a high-quality product. I also get to learn how to use an abacus. I teach college-level math. I will share the information with my students.

Great tool
My 5 year old son uses this independently (well, after we’ve done it together) to help him solve addition and subtraction and to count by 10, 5, and 2. This has been an excellent visual and hands on tool for teaching.

Not an abacus, but close enough for my granddaughter
This is made very well, as are all Melissa & Doug products. This is not a true abacus, since an abacus has two sections on each row (2 beads and 5 beads per row), however, it’s still a great product in order to teach a child colors and counting.A real abacus would be too complicated for a small child to figure out, and certainly not as fun to play with as this product is.

Bought for my Granddaughter
I purchased this for my 6 year old granddaughter. Her favorite subject is math. Instead of counting on her fingers, she can use her abacus. She loves it.

Looks just like the picture.
I have always wanted one of these especially as I have my daughter. I think it will help her and take away some of the screen time she has. As soon as she got it she was fascinated and wanted to do more. It will help her with her counting skills..

2-year-old Very Excited!
I sent this abacus to my 2-year-old grandson, along with a Dr Seuss counting book, “Ten Apples Up On Top.”When he saw it, he said, “Whoa!” He was so excited he played with it for well over an hour. Before the abacus was delivered, I’d texted his mom a couple of YouTube videos about how to teach abacus to toddlers. She’s already been teaching him to count crayons, so when she asked him to count 1 & 2 beads, one at a time, he did it! He slid the beads & said, “One…Two.”You could see the lightbulbs going on in his brain! He was so into it!I’m very impressed by the quality of this abacus: It’s very well-made, solid, sturdy, beautiful, & easy for a toddler to handle.

I got this to help with math concepts. It’s wood, not plastic, and works great.

Needed a wider base. Child or parent has to hold it upright when the beads are being moved.
Liked it overall but base is narrow and a bit flimsy overall. Ok with supervision. Not made in USA 😒

The Wonder of Counting
Bought this to help my grandson learn to count, adding subtracting….. he loves it…. who would have thought that the oldest way (using an abacus) would still hold strong to learning basic math for a 4 year old…..

I love this toy/ learning tool
I got this for my 3 year old and 1 year old to start teaching early math skills. They love it, it’s sturdy, solid, and I’m not worried about them breaking it. It’s a great size and all around I’m very pleased with this purchase.

We did a little most days keeping it fun and stopping when I saw her interest start to …
I used this to teach my daughter to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide. I first started with the abacus and then added flash cards. Then problems on paper. We did a little most days keeping it fun and stopping when I saw her interest start to wane. When she entered first grade she knew her multiplication and division tables and could do simple arithmatic. Any parent that is willing to spend a little time each day, and keep things fun can do the same. In school she tutored other students who needed help. This bolsters self confidence, and self esteem. Since she didn’t need the math part of class I asked the teacher to assign her other educational tasks for that time. It was a struggle at first with the school, but they came around. I made sure the teacher gave her all the tests other students took to be sure I had missed nothing. She was invited to join the gifted and talented program the school had at that time. That program is really tests kids for the amount of education they have compaired to others, not their innate intellegence.

Decent abacus, but a little buyer’s remorse
This is a sturdy, well-made abacus. It has been dropped on the floor several times by my kids and survived. It was a definite improvement to the virtual abacus we had been using. In retrospect, I wish I had bought an abacus that had different colors to clearly demonstrate groups of 5 on each row. I used a permanent marker to draw a line around 5 of the beads on each row to make this grouping clear, but there were other brands of abacus that had this feature at a similar price point.

We use this for homeschooling my 7 year old. If he’s having trouble working out a math problem we pull out our abacus to visualize and solve the problem!

Wood came split
Warning for younger babies: Bought this for my girl (6 months) as a sensory activity while she’s learning how to sit up- it came split on the top. Unfortunately that’s where she likes to chew. So my husband sanded it and it’s fine now but the wood was split badly and would have cut her

Just as advertised
I have a pretty tough five-year-old daughter who can destroy anything. She’s learning how math in kindergarten learning addition, subtraction, and soon multiplication. This is the best to assist the children in face-to-face learning. Everything is taught on the tablet for this generation, but learning is reinforced face-to-face. The product is very well made.

Place value must- have!!
This has been such a blessing for my son to better comprehend place value during homeschool. We’ve tried counting bears and sorting into groups, number blocks, counting clicker, and nothing resonated with him like this!! We use it unconventionally for the time being– he counts each bead, then identifies the “ones” by looking for the extra beads used in the last row, then the tens column is identified as the number of complete rows. For example, the number 32 would be two single beads in the bottom most incomplete row, and three entire rows=three “tens”. Anyway, if you’re looking for a good visual solution to teaching place values, this works for us!!

Old counting tool, a new generation
Little one is going through some advance math for her age and I was looking for a tool that could help her work out the problems without resorting to an electronic short cut. Fingers and toes worked for a while, but she only has so many. Enter the abacus, a counting tool that’s been helping keep track of large numbers for thousands of years. No batteries or AC adapter required. To my surprise, the little one immediately took to it, and is able to calculate large numbers with ease. I also found interesting how she remember the temporary assigned place values with no need for a sticker or sharpie indicating which is which. This abacus is now a go to item for homework these days.Construction wise, it pretty well built. Sides and base a nice thick wood, with metal rods supporting each row of wooden beads. Metal rods aren’t thick, bit they aren’t coat hander thin either. All the pieces are smooth, no sharp corners or splinters.Overall, I and the little one are impressed with the abacus. Curious to see how long the little one will relay on it.

Perfect for a professor of physics
My friend graduated with a ph.d in physics and thought he could use some help in the field. It’s on his desk at his new job and he is flourishing. Thanks Melissa and Doug whoever y’all are. I honestly think he would not have made it without this abacus cuz he’s a bit smooth brained.
