Lid won’t close, lid support cracked.
I assemble a LOT of furniture and I was pretty happy with this toy chest until it came to putting the lid supports on. It cracked!! I did -not- over tighten the screws. Like I said, I assemble a lot of furniture, I know what I’m doing. It started cracking as soon as I started screwing it in. Too far along in assembly to disassemble and send back. Annoying. The lid also does not close all the way. I don’t know what that’s about, but I hate it. I can push it closed but it won’t stay closed, it pops right back up.Aside, If you’re having trouble aligning the holes for the lid, as a tip I recommend using two of the styrofoam packing pieces to lift the chest off the floor. My daughter is only a year old so I guess we’ll see how it holds up, but I’m pretty disappointed with the quality. I love Melissa and Doug products, and I’m usually so happy with them. But this chest just isn’t worth the price. I would have expected to maybe pay $60 for this, not $150+.Maybe I missed this note somewhere as well, but the lid cannot be used as a bench for an adult. I can press in the center with my hand and feel it give way a little bit, so I don’t recommend trying it.

Excellent little toy chest
My kid loves opening and closing this toy chest. I was expecting the safety hinges to be slow closing, but they’re actually locking hinges that hold the lid in position after moving it. This was a very pleasant surprise and makes it much easier for my 18 month old to be able to reach in and out at his leisure.Only a couple gripes.Attaching the safety hinges felt like it was way more difficult than it should be, having to hold the lid at a precise angle to align the holes and then awkwardly tighten them far enough so they don’t rip out (one did for me) when trying to position it better to finish tightening more comfortably. Also because of the very sturdy safety hinges, the lid doesn’t sit against the base when you close it all the way. This created some rather annoying knocking sounds whenever you would touch the lid in the “closed” position. I solved this problem by adding some velcro strips to the contact points on either side of the hand safety gap and now there’s no more knocking because of the added padding, and the lid stays shut when you close it (mostly).Lastly, as others have noted, the floor of the chest is in pretty deep for a young child to reach and it feels fairly flimsy for the volume of toys (and potentially a mischievous child) it is expected to hold. We added some pillows at the bottom to effectively raise the floor and so far it hasn’t had an actual problem with the floor, but we haven’t been putting much heavy things in there as of yet, and probably never will because I just cant trust that floor. All in all an excellent little toy chest.

Spacious
Love this but we had a minor issue with the holes. We needed to swap a long screw with one of the smaller ones. This being because the bottom front hole was not drilled correctly. I do wish the bottom board was a more sturdy wood material. My fear is it breaking due to the weight of toys. The hinges were easy to put together. Follow the instructions and make sure to angle the lid upwards slighty to get the holes lined up. Other than the scew mishap it was simple to assemble and is 5 stars. It holds a lot of toys and can hide away the larger items. The lid doesnt slam down and if your child climbs into it they can get out. There is also a hole in the back of the chest just in case. Compared to other toy chests I do prefer this and will order another one at hopefully a sale price

Panels don’t align and arrived with some broken parts
Overall a solid product. Wish it was better for the price paid. The lid doesn’t align correctly and won’t close smoothly. The back panel arrived with a crack in it.I’ve already assembled it by the time I noticed these things so won’t be taking it apart to return it. Expected more from a premium product.

Fitment and small damages.
Even though it looks good there’s a few things that need fixing the factory screws the ones that ore on the lid plates came stripped so I’ll have to fix it myself and the lid of the box scrapes the side when closing because the screws were put in side ways. Looks great once put together I thought the wood would be a bit stronger like more solid wood. But not that bad is it worth the 175 let’s see if it lasts but a bit over priced to have these little mistakes. If the company reaches out to me and sends me a new side (A) without predrilled holes and a new backing piece then I’d change my review to five stars just cause shows concern. And will be doing the right thing. Then I’d say it’s worth the money. Or make a stronger box sell it for a bit more to make up for better material I’d pay 300$ for a box like that even more if made out of some Mahogany wood. 500-700$ for a box that can last a life time is well worth it for my little girl.

What a life saver!
And when I say life saver, I mean it! My daughter would take her toy organizer bins and just dump them on the floor the moment my head was turned. It was always a mess and she was always falling and getting hurt so I knew I needed to upgrade! In comes the Melissa & Doug real wood toy chest. My biggest fear was pinched fingers and now that I have it all assembled and have been using it for over a week I can say with assurance, you do not have to worry about those sweet little bitty baby fingers being smashed. The safety hinges in the back are amazing! There is absolutely no way to pinch baby fingers in there! You also do not have to worry about the lid coming down and smashing their fingers either because the hinges in back will hold the lid upright whether there is a human or anything else there to support it. The lid only comes down when pushed down with intent. You do not have to push hard, it’s a very gentle close.I was really happy to see this was real wood and even has the smell of brand new, real wood! Like walking through the lumber yard at your nearest Lowe’s. Assembly was very easy. The only part I found a little challenging was getting the hinges mounted to the toy chest and lid because this is the last step of your assembly the chest has to be tilted just so, that way everything lines up and doesn’t over extend the hinges.I honestly think in retrospect, attachment of the lid would have been much easier to do if I had but the back brace/bar on before the lid getting attached. That bar will help you to keep the lid in the correct position to install the hinges!Bottom line: This is a very good sized toy chest sure to fit mostly every toy of even the most spoiled child. I recommend this for every age from toddler on up to about age 8 or even an adult would like this to hold blankets or anything you would like to keep tucked away for easy access and provide additional bench-style seating.

Beautiful & Safely Constructed Child Toy Chest
Beautiful & well constructed toy chest with child safety in mind (e.g. lid panel includes anti-slam hinges, front panel top edge is machined to allow easy opening without pinchpoint, & air vent hole added to inside back panel). It was very easy to assemble & I received my order within only 2 days. Thereforefore I rated 4 out of 5 score. The only suggestion to make it a too score of 5; I would have preferred the inside bottom panel to be made with wood at same thickness as other wooden panels instead of the thin board used at bottom because it would not surprise me if some children got inside toy chest which could break bottom panel even though child is not supposed to get inside chest. Kids will do childish things sometimes. Other than that, I loved the toy chest.

Lid does not align properly
Overall the construction seemed good and was easy to assemble. However, the lid is not aligned properly and will not close without scraping the side panel. Looks to be an issue with the hinge alignment, which are factory installed on one piece and connected to factory drilled holes on the lid.You can probably re-drill the hinge holes to fix the issue. I just ended placing a small washer between the side panel and front to give the lid some extra space to close. Not ideal, but it worked.

Nice product
I wish that inflation and price could be a bit more affordable for families with children, but our economy is our making, and it seems Melissa and Doug try to put out a good product without the higher prices, even though the cost of this was over-budget for us. It did come out better than cheaper models and maybe just as good as the more expensive ones I viewed online.

Good toy chest, but assembly issues
A nice chest overall, but the frame cracked a tiny bit while screwing in the soft-close hardware. In fairness, I was using a power drill and the instructions warned not to do that, however I was going pretty slow and had no issues with any other screws.Perhaps more importantly, one of the pre-drilled screw holes (used to connect the side to the back) wasn’t long enough to accommodate the intended screw. As a quick fix I swapped a short screw meant for the seat back with the intended long screw. Other more time-consuming options would have been to try to drill the hole deeper myself or to reach out to customer service and request a return / replacement.

Looks very nice
I was debating weather to just buy a cheaper toy box but ended up buying this one which was quite a bit more. But it is totally worth it. I was able to put it together without the help of my husband. And the quality of the toy box is amazing. My son loves to climb on top of it and he is 30 lbs. It takes the weight no problem.

Large, sturdy, and looks good in toddlers room
Love that this has a safety hinge so he doesn’t slam his fingers when closing the lid. Makes me feel at ease knowing he can open and close while playing in his room without me there the whole time. This was easy to put together, I did it by myself in maybe half an hour or so. I can sit on the lid with my toddler on my lap and it feels very sturdy.

Huge and seems sturdy but won’t close
I like how huge it is, very spacious for my kid’s toys. I like the color it matches his other furnitures in his room. It is pretty heavy so it seems sturdy but the bottom board is made of thin wood seems like it will break easy. The instructions are pretty easy to follow but it won’t let you use power tools so it can get tiring screwing all screws. One of my biggest disappointment is we did exactly what’s the instructions but the lid won’t close all the way and 1 screw for the hinge is defective and they don’t have any extra screws 🤦🏻♀️

Wood sturdiness
It is a beautiful toy chest and the wood seems to be pretty sturdy. However when the screws are put in for the safety hinges thewood starts to split. I did not use power tools as directed and it still split. I purchased 2 of the brown and it did I on the inside of both as shown in the pictures. I am hoping it will still hold up and last regardless. The only constructive suggestion I can think of is that different screws used or sent in the future so it does not split. Again they are pretty despite this issue.

A beautiful piece with a great safety feature
I purchased this to match the deep wood colors in our house – specifically where our kid loves to play. It’s not the BIGGEST toy box you could get, but it does a great job at holding a lot of the toys we have laying around. We can easily fill it with the smaller and medium sized toys, shut the lid, and it looks like a beautiful chest in our living area. But what really sold me was the hinge system. The lid DOES NOT slam shut when opened. The lid will stay fixed in whatever position it’s set to – closed, partially opened, all the way… it doesn’t matter because the lid stays there. This is great for toddlers learning to explore and put things away so little fingers don’t get smashed. My child can open the chest, get a toy, and I don’t have to worry about the lid crashing down on his head or fingers. And with him exploring, he loves to open and close the lid to find his toys – and I feel safe to let him learn with this chest. Well worth the money for the beauty, functionality, and safety of this piece.

10/10 recommend!
We LOVEEEE this toy box!! SO easy to assemble, very sturdy (could be used as a bench seat to put shoes on, etc), and holds SO MANY toys. Honestly, if we ever have more toys than will fit in here, it’s time to donate! 🙂 Of course it’s already filled since Christmas just passed, but it truly is a great size. We have a small house and the toy box replaced the storage ottoman that we had there. It’s not bulky at all, perfect dimensions honestly. It’s a beautiful quality REAL wood, not cheap particle board. The hinges are pretty tight, so the toy box doesn’t close all the way unless there is something to weigh it down on top. I assume it will close all the way once the hinges loosen up, but I’m fine with it for now since that means no pinched fingers!!! It’s loose enough that my son can open and close it himself and dig all the toys out of it that he wants. Overall, great purchase for the size & quality!!! If we had a bigger house and another child, I would probably buy another one to put in each of their rooms, but for now this one meets our need!

Great design, quality, and safety
The design is top notch. From the extra bar on top, the side handles and the soft open and close lid. The instructions are the best I have ever seen. Part a, next part b, then past c. Use hardware 1, then hardware 2 etc. So intuitive that I’m surprised this level of instruction is not the default. The best I have ever seen. Can’t say how much I appreciated the thoughtfulness.

Wonderful…don’t be fooled by poor reviews
I now own three of these wonderful toy chests. I want to buy at least 1 more. They are fantastic. All of mine are natural wood. They are gorgeous. Many of the poor reviews are from people who are not apparently skilled at putting things together. This is one of the easiest pieces of furniture I have ever put together. The directions are great. The screws are divided up nicely and even numbered. Everything lines up perfectly. Inside the side panels the have metal for the bolts to screw into (not all toy boxes have this). It makes them very sturdy. As for the complaints for the flimsy bottom, they are ridiculous. In one of my boxes, I have a 50 pound bag of rabbit food and also a 40 pound bag of horse bedding pellets. As to the so called lid issue, you need to lift the lid slightly when lining up the holes and everything lines up perfectly (see my picture that shows how far the lid is supposed to open). I think some reviewers are over tightening the bolts and this can cause damage to the wood. Screws need to be hand tightened. Also, do not fully tighten anything until the complete box is built and then fully tighten everything. The toy boxes are sturdy enough for us to sit on as well (I would not recommend standing on them though).I want to add that the entire toybox can be put together with one Phillips screwdriver.Update: I have four of them now lol. They are still beautiful and super sturdy. The one with both the 50 pound bag of rabbit food and 50 pound bag of bedding pellets is still in pristine condition and the bottom is still in perfect condition. Added awesomeness….crayon washes off easily 🙂

Super cute!
We needed a nice looking toy box downstairs in the living room and this gem was perfect! Not only does the wood match our hardwood floors and decor, it fits all our grandsons toys perfectly. I’m a grandma and putting it together was super easy!! If I can do it….anyone can do it. I had read reviews from those that complained about putting it together…I had no problems and it was super easy, so don’t get distracted by those negative reviews, just buy it!! 🙂

This toy box is great!
I assembled this by myself relatively quickly. I had to redo parts because my kids were running around so I skipped a couple of steps, but even with that I was finished in about an hour.Reviews are my blessing and curse. I read so many reviews when making a purchase and sometimes the bad reviews can easily persuade me not to do something. I’m glad I didn’t do that here.Yes, I think this is too expensive but with inflation right now I think everything is too expensive. This piece is totally quality. I had zero issues with wood splitting and the lid stays open when pulled up, as it should. It fit two wide bins and a bunch of stuffed animals. This gave me a lot more storage without being an eyesore. Would totally purchase again.

Looks very nice, but…..
I purchased this toy chest for two reasons. One, I needed a chest for my grandkids toys for when they are at our house. Two, I purchased the M&D chest because they are typically well-known for their quality and safety of their products. Now for my review of the chest.First off, there were no instructions included. I had to go online to get the instructions. No big deal, but still…I was surprised that an M&D product was not thoroughly inspected for ALL items that should have been included.Secondly, one of the long bolts would go into the threaded hole just so far, leaving the bolt about 3/4 inch above the frame. I assume that the threads in the hole were damaged since the bolt went into all the other holes just fine and none of the other bolts would go into that particular hole. My remedy was, unfortunately, to use one of the short bolts in that hole.Of course, that left me one short bolt short (haha) for the back brace. My husband cut the long bolt and we tried that in the hole for the piece but it wouldn’t work. So now we have to find another short bolt to finish the brace. Really? It sure would have been nice to have each threaded hole inspected to make sure that every bolt would work. But then, this product is made in Vietnam and the workers are undoubtedly assembling these chests very quickly. Finally, as almost every reviewer has said, the top will not shut completely. You would think that the safety lid supports would be made to allow the lid to close gently so little fingers won’t get pinched. It doesn’t look great with it always open, but I guess I’ll put something on top to make it close. I hope that my grandchildren will like using this toy chest and that it holds up.

Better than expected
I wasn’t expecting much from this. Just a place to drop all the toys in. But the box is pretty sturdy and was easy to assemble. The little hinge that prevents it from closing on its own is so helpful when you have small kids! All in all, well worth the money. Can’t expect anything less from Melissa and Doug

READ THIS before you buy – Assembly Instructions misleading, Quality could be improved
Purchased for a Christmas gift based on reviews and that it was a little larger than others. Nothing damaged and well packaged. Good hardware package. Assembly guidance started out well until it came to putting the lid on. You will notice in the first picture I attached that the lid is at an angle. This is not depicted in the instructions very well and not discussed in the written instructions at all, see pictures. First thing I noticed was the holes for the support hinges didn’t line up with both the lid and chest when laid flat as depicted; I assumed this was a manufacturing defect. I almost drilled new holes until I read a review from 2018. Somebody did just that and everything got screwed up. You will note in the instruction pictures I have attached that the chest is depicted with the lid straight up so you would assume that is the way it should be. WRONG, WRONG WRONG. The chest is designed for the door to open no further than an angle. Both the support hinges and the cross brace in the back will not allow this but it is not intuitive in the instructions. Albeit, when you look real close on attachment image you see the lid at a slight angle, but it is easily missed. Additionally, the support hinges are very stiff as they are meant to hold the lid open yet look at the screws mounting them. They are very short and not as depicted in the instructions. I expect that after some moderate use these will eventually pull out based on the stiffness of the supports. What is most disconcerting is that The Melissa and Doug Company has known about this issue since 2018 and never did anything about it. This shows a complete lack of quality control follow up. While I have no issues with how it turned out; I like the size and look. To leave bad instructions in place for about 2 years demonstrates more interest in profit over customer satisfaction.

Absolutely love this toy box
We love this toy box. It doesn’t take up too much space and it’s pretty deep which made enough room for the majority of my kids toys. It was also easy to put together. I also love that it doesn’t slam shut when you try to close it you actually have to push it all the way down. So I won’t have to worry about them smashing their fingers.
