UPDATE ON THIS. Chess Armory contacted me and is shipping the missing pieces. Great customer service! Changed ratings. ORIGINAL: Got this for my don’t as xmas gift. We just tried playing our first game. A brown pawn and one white rook is missing. Good not great
The quality is good. I wasn’t really excited by the quality, though. The board had some blemishes. A number of pieces were missing (customer service via Chess Armory was SUPER helpful and responsive — five stars for them). The pieces are a little light for my taste.Overall, I think the price is a little high for what you get. Maybe get a used one and save some money.

Perfect set
Let me start off by saying I am very new to chess. Maybe a week or two. I ordered this set not knowing the quality but pleased with the price. I ordered it on Tuesday and received it today { Thursday }. I have seen other reviews about missing pieces and nicked up boards, but my set is in perfect condition. The board itself is beautiful and the pieces are great. They are light but for a beginning set I really don’t care. There a few other sets I would eventually like to buy with weighted pieces but much more expensive so I will wait. So if your looking for an inexpensive folding set I highly recommend this one.

Good travel set. Pieces are a bit light for a permanent home chess set
This set certainly works. The board opens well and hides the seam. The board is solid. The pieces are all neatly stored inside the board when it folds up. As a travel set this is very good. As a beginner set also adequate. I down graded it to 4 stars because the pieces are very light and unstable. My cat found them to be good for playing hockey. I brought out an older plastic set that are weighted at the bottom and have wide bases to play with at home using this board. Were the pieces on the set being reviewed similarly weighted I would have given it 5 stars.

Beautiful set
I bought this because my 5 year old grandson and I wanted to learn how to play chess. It has been so enjoyable to watch learning videos together and you can see it click in his mind. When we play, he will talk through the plays and then realize my player could take him so he changes his thoughts. He loves this set and quickly learned the names of the pieces and locations of them. It has been a great item for us. Very good quality and the warranty is phenomenal

Really poorly manufactured pieces
Looks like I got one of the sets that escaped quality assurance. The pieces were chipped. One of the queens barely had any of her crown notches in place. One of the Knights’ ears was missing.It’s not a terrible set. It’s just not worth it to me what they are charging for it.Several of the wooden pieces were chipped and malformed.The board also did not lay flat when opened and in position with the pieces deployed.

Multiple pieces chipped/scratched/or made poorly
I am the Activities Director at an assisted living facility and bought this set for my residents to use. Most of the pieces that come in the set are either chipped/scratched/or made unevenly. You can look at each knight and notice how each one looks nothing remotely like the other. One of the knights even has a small chunk taken out of its head. One of the pawns in the set also isn’t straight but rather crooked. A good majority of the pieces do not sit flat on the board. Also, the board does not sit entirely flat on any table.

Really great value
I was looking around for a reasonably priced, larger board, without plastic pieces. I was having a tough time finding a middle range board ($30-$50), until I found this one. The pieces and board still aren’t as nice as if you were to spend $100-$800 like I was seeing all over the place once you got out of the Walmart/Target brand boards, but it is a nice starting board for me to have setting out before I know exactly what I want and am willing to spend more.

Buy it for the board, not the lightweight pieces
Love this beautiful, large, fold-up board. Economical. Strong magnets keep it shut tight. Beautiful wood surface and nice ledges. But forget the easy-to-tip-over, super light, cheaply-made wooden pieces included. I replaced them with some quality weighted pieces I have. Be warned that these squares are not quite 2″, so if you use tournament-sized pieces, they will loom a little large on the set. So I have a smaller wooden set, and it looks great! Happy with this board.

The board is a made of quality wood but for the price I expected a bit more uniformity. The board doesn’t fully close and a few chess pieces have damaged felt and even a pawn that is slanted. Solid board but for the price I expected more.

Perfect for at home or travel.
I love chess. I’m not very good, only about 1000 rating on chess.com but this chess board makes it so that I can play with family and friends so I’m grateful for that. The pieces are easily stored inside the chess board and it even comes with an extra queen for each color. For the price, the quality of the board and pieces are really good. Great buy.

A good wooden set for the price
The board is foldable and looks better than in the picture. The hinges came a bit loose, but that can be fixed (it would be nice that the pieces of cloth that cover the hinges could be easily removable in order to tighten the hinges, but for the price I cannot ask for more). The pieces are not great, but again for the price they are acceptable. My only disappointment came from the size of the squares: they are announced to be of 2 inches (5.08 cm), and they are a bit smaller than that (between 1.8 and 1.9 inches). Although this is a minor disparity, it makes a difference when you use pieces designed for boards with 2-inches squares.

Best First Choice
This board is solid but, pieces, even though made of wood, are very light. Two pieces came chipped slightly and the felt on bottom of one fell off upon opening. Overall, I would say this chess board is a great first choice. Its beautiful to look at, you can carry pieces inside the folding board which is nice. While the felt fell off one piece and having a few slightly chipped pieces I will not mark star rating too much since these may always be present in manufacturing.Honestly, if pieces are broken or board is defective in any way one can always make a return so I cannot be a jerk and reduce star rating for something that can easily be replaced. Again, this is a great starter board and it promises to be a board I will always have.

Holy Crap….! My chest set just came I Unboxed it, and inspected everything…!! This Beautiful Wood Chess Set, is Absolutely freaking Unbelievable.! Nothing was chipped ,the board was smooth and finished…! I cannot imagine Why anyone would ( not give this a high rating ) maybe I was just lucky and got one that was absolutely perfect ….!!!! But for the money this set is fantastic ….! The pieces are extremely well balanced, and the set It’s very impressive to look at….! The chess set was for my grandson . He loves to challenge you to a game ! The set was nice and looked as pictured . He was very excited when he saw it. However when he opened the case , the hinge broke. It was a bit disappointing , but ok. He was ready to play.

Nice set, missing pieces.
The set itself is very nice. Unfortunately it arrived missing a chess piece-a pawn. Upon contacting the seller, a replacement pawn was sent. Actually 4 of them. Unfortunately all 4 were the wrong size for our set. They are smaller than the other pawns. We now have to reach out and request the proper replacement piece. It is becoming inconvenient.UPDATE:Still waiting to hear back from seller. Has not responded to our latest email. We still need the correct size Pawn to go with our set.

Wonderful Chess Set
My husband was looking for a larger chess set since he has been playing more frequently, and it has been amazing! This is much larger than our old chess set, the colors are nice and easily distinguishable (sadly our old brass and silver-colored one was hard to tell the difference between the piece sets in certain lights), holds the pieces well and folds up nicely. It also comes with a flyer to get new players started, and online resources for anyone looking for a community of chess players. I am considering buying this again for my nephew who has taken up chess, as this would make a wonderful, quality gift.

Great chess set!
It is very well made and was a gift for my grandson. He mentioned he was learning to play chess on internet. I thought it would be better to have a hands on set. He was very surprised. The quality of each piece is amazing. He can now display his chess set in his room or just study the possible moves of chess any time.

Great for the price – minor design flaws
For the money, this is a great starter folding chess set. Everything came in good working condition. There is a minor design flaw, where the hinge on the bottom of the set keeps it from laying completely flat when unfolded and in the position. I folded up a few sheet of paper and put it under one side to even it out, and now you cant tell without close inspection. Some of the felt is not 100% aligned on the knights, and the weight in my white queen rattles slightly, but overall this is a good set for under $40. It displays well too.

I really like the size and that it folds, containing the pieces inside, which are secured with elastic straps so when put away properly no sorting through a jumble of pieces. The set is completely wood with the exception of some conveniences which had to be of a different material, the cloth lining which protects the finish of the pieces, the elastic straps which keep them organized in travel, and the small magnets which keep the folded board closed.The pieces are a good size, pawns just small enough to hold one in a closed hand and the other between the fingers, keeping them out of sight so if you use a single handed conceal, as I do, you don’t have to have sleight of hand skills. The extra queens are a good feature for those games in which a pawn is promoted with the queen still in play.The cloth lining leaves a little room for improvement, it looks like it was an afterthought and applied without attention to detail. It isn’t straight, not following the inside shape of the wood, and it isn’t glued in a couple of places, corners and buckles in the cloth from the failure to keep the application straight. The Chess Armory screened logo inside has most of the Y covered by one of the aforementioned applications of cloth lacking attention to detail.I can tell the most likely first wear and tear to the set will be the elastic tearing the cloth lining where it uses the cloth to secure it in place, I might be able to hold that off by adding a brad between the two pieces but it would require a very short brad as the pressed wood material to which the squares are a veneer is roughly 4 mm thick and I wouldn’t want to cause it to disturb the veneer, which by nature is very fragile.Despite devoting two paragraphs to what I think could be done better, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend it for a chess set in its price range. If I spent more time playing chess I could justify a higher price range but I don’t and this is more than good enough for my purposes, which is just having a nice size, easily portable chess set to play wherever I may be.

Honest, non-dramatic, non-biased review incoming…Ordered yesterday, arrived today. Has 3 white queens, but no white king. All other pieces accounted for. Wrote manufacturer about the issue. Depending on resolution time, I’ll modify the review. 3 stars for now.The board is nice enough. Everything is lined up well (board halves, print, hinges). Finish on the board and pieces is decent. Very few blemishes on my pieces, but I see others have received some that are pretty rough looking. Pieces are a bit light in weight, but that’s probably just me being used to stone pieces. The felt on one of the brown pawns was not lined up, but it was a simple fix.I like the large 17” size board. Folded board held closed with magnets, not latches, which I like. Felt pieces cover/hide the inside of the hinges, which is a nice touch. The additional queens is nice too.I’ll let you know how the customer service works out with regard to the missing piece. Included card says “Is your chess set missing anything?”. It sounds like it might possibly be a common thing.Update 11/4Received response from manufacturer about an hour and a half after I contacted them. They’re sending a replacement piece. We’ll see how long it takes to get here.Update 11/11After a couple of emails back and forth to ensure I got the right pieces for my set (they said they would send a pawn as well for the felt issue I had), they shipped out on the 6th, and I got them on the 10th (they could have been sitting in the mailbox for a day, so let’s call it 3 days in transit). Unfortunately I received yet another white queen (:facepalm:), along with the pawn. I was very clear in my email (“I need a WHITE KING”). Also unfortunate was that the pieces they sent were shorter than those in my set. In my initial email I provided the SAH Creatives link to the set I purchased, so receiving the short pieces was a bit surprising. I emailed them and included a photo of the pieces they sent, along side pieces from my set, for reference (see attached image). They promptly replied with a new tracking number. I suspect this time it will be correct.We took a sharpie and drew a big X on the top of one of the many queens so we could play. These things are really light, and I’m knocking over the taller pieces pretty regularly. It could just be my big ogre hands. If I had to do it over again, I’d go with weighted or magnetic set.I was both lucky (board was lined up and looked good, unlike some of the other reviews, almost no blemishes on my pieces), and unlucky (missing piece, wrong replacement shipped initially). Customer service was very responsive, which was good, but this has now turned out to be more hassle than I’d like. Based on my experience, and some of the other reviews, there is a fair chance that you might run into a quality related issue. It’s a bit of a crap shoot. However, I’m pretty confident they’ll make it right in the end. You may need, as in my case, a little patience, which I still currently have. However, if I have to come back in here to provide another update, I’m confident that patience will have run out at that point, and drama will likely ensue :)Overall it’s a decent set for the money (will be in probably 3 days). I only wish the pieces were heavier. I’m moving this to up 4 stars in anticipation of the correct piece arriving (deducting a star for the hassle, not the set).Final update:The king, of correct size and color, did arrive. Unfortunately it has a spot on it (see photo). Not the end of the world.

Nice set
This is a nice set, however you have to store the pieces inside just perfectly otherwise it will not fully close. It’s also a little weird they added an extra queen for both colors in the set. And you have to take them out when you play otherwise the board won’t sit flat. Minor issues so it’s not worth sending back or anything, still just a little annoying.
